The famous station Radio Caroline, is enjoying much media attention here in the UK, due to the release of a film called; The Boat That Rocked.
Set in the mid 1960's at the height of the offshore pirate radio station boom, The Boat That Rocked is a comedy based on Radio Caroline and the other offshore pop stations, which broadcast to the UK from ships at sea from 1964 - 67, when the BBC failed to broadcast the enormously popular, pop music of the time. The Beatles and Rolling Stones etc etc were not heard on BBC radio.
Caroline's last offshore broadcast from the North Sea [off the coast of England] ended when armed British & Dutch authorities boarded the Caroline ship whlle it was in international waters - which was an illegal act of piracy itself. Since then Caroline has mainly broadcast on satellite and internet radio.
