.

I just found out that in the Firefox Browsers when we click the Listen link a window will pop up to search for the player..... Is there anyway we can navigate out of this. It is a bit tricky for an average listener to navigate thru the program folders to find the .exe application

This is a big deal for me because 1/3 of my listeners are Firefox users and I am trying to get as much listeners out there.

Hi,
there is something wrong on your system. If streamer is installed properly firefox will open streamerp2p:// links with streamer.

I'm using firefox as well and never had to choose a application.

I see firefox tries to open c:\program files\streamer cd\streamer.exe
Is this the right folder?

yes thats the right folder to point but the listener has to navigate himself to the folder ... most cant

if you look at the image attached the listener would most probably click the winamp for it has an icon and not to the streamer which shows only the navigation link

ok. There is something wrong on your machine. Wrong or no protocol handler in firefox for streamerp2p:// links. You can try to fix it by reinstalling streamer. This is no general bug cause it normaly works in firefox. Here are many firefox users and i never heard about any problems with the streamer links.

Yes this happened for me as well.

You only get it once if you check the box to always use.

I think it is just part of the process.

Ok thanks. I had no problems with FF 2.X or 3.X but i can test it on a clean/new XP machine (Virtualbox). Let's see if i can force the same behaviour.

Thanks, just couldn't imagine what would happen to this forum if you few good men are not around!

I have already test it on other machines. Same Behaviour and like what Tom said you get it only once if you check the box. But the issue is how to go around it because the tendency of the average listener is to click the winamp icon and not the streamer path (see image).

Looks like firefox 3 is either 'broken', or is asking users to verify the handler that is already registered with windows for 'streamerp2p://' uri's.

When streamer is run, it registers ownership of 'streamerp2p://' style links in web pages with Windoze, not with Firefox or Internet Exploder.
The usual behaviour of a browser when a user clicks on a 'streamerp2p://' style link is for the browser to pass the entire link to windows, windows looks up the handler for the link type, and runs the appropriate program with the rest of the link passed to the program. This happens for all uri types except 'http://' and a few others.

It looks like Firefox 3 is adding an extra stage, and asking the user to verify that windows is going to actually run the right program. This is fine, except for people who are not experts, and that is most people.

Why does it bring up Winamp though?, that has nothing to do with 'streamerp2p://' uri's at all.

How have these Streamers been installed, because the normal install path for Streamer using the official installer is:
/program files/Streamer/Streamer.exe and not /program files/streamer cd/streamer.exe

Where is this 'streamer cd' folder name coming from?, is this a freaky custom installer?.

What happens if you install it with my official installer, as I encourage people to do, downloaded from our site?

The "Streamer cd" is the custom folder name I made... doesnt do anything with the installer... Its the very installer downloaded from the website but installed to a different folder name. I have two streamerp2p installation in my machine.

PS: referring to my original post, the issue was on the how an average listener can pass/navigate the stage, to click the streamer link rather than the winamp link or any other player installed in the machine. StreamerP2P dont have an icon, just a link. In the image I attached, an average user will find the winamp icon tempting to click.

And thanks for developing streamerp2p. I still believe that it is still one of the best broadcasting solution over the internet. Maybe there are already few others that are altready in the forefront like M_g_l_s & J_st_n to mention a few, but I believe that StreamerP2P still the best except that those mention just made it easy for the listeners to tune in (ex. no installation needed).

I am still hoping and I know that I will be back streaming back here in Streamerp2p for I believe that it has got the details we broadcaster wants. It just happens that no development has been seen for quite a time.

Virgin machine.. This one didn't even have Winamp installed and FF3. I searched for my station and clicked on the Streamer icon to listen and got the following:

Hmmmm....

Oh and yes, I am still alive. ;-)

Nice :D Looks like the path to the compiled projcect on Iains developer machine. But why does it appear on a users machine? I assume it's the 1.47 and not the latest beta right?

You can force the warning if you change the FF3 config:
open a browser tab and enter about:config. Search for streamerp2p and swicth the boolean value to true.

Or / And switch action in ff3 settings (applications - filetype streamerp2p)

Now i get the alert also but with the right path.

Sorry for the long delay here but, it looks like this is just another one of those things we have to put up with now days in the name of security on the internet. I would suggest that listener education is in order. Give em a screenshot created from a fresh install in the default folders so that the path will be correct and put that image on your website with a few instructions and you should get much better results from it.

I'm afraid that's all we can offer for now.

Meat

Hi I had a few probs with the browser detecting the app.

I got this STREAME.EXE %1 in chose apps and clicked it..

I looked into a way to register the app via a registry install file that could be done silent mode maybe.

I can make install files and register stuff. I see what I can do..

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Register_protocol

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\foo]
@="URL:foo Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\foo\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\foo\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\foo\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Application\\program.exe\" \"%1\""

Replace foo with the protocol you're specifying and C:\\Program Files\\Application\\program.exe with the program you want to run. [3] Note that backslashes must be doubled and the additional slashes and quotes before the path must not be removed. Save the file, then double-click it to insert into the Windows registry. See Registering an Application to a URL Protocol for additional information.

I hope this helps.
