How does Streamer and Peercast compare as far as anonimity and security are concerned.

Does Peercast use basically the same technology and therefore the level of anonimity very similar? The reason I ask is cuz Peercast says it is basically anonimous and I was wondering how accurate this claim was and if it also applied to Streamer?

Thanks in advance.

Streamer is a little more secure than Peercast... but only once you have an established audience... I say this... becuase, In a tuning URL for Peercast, the seeder (broadcaster) has his/her ip address shown in the link. This doesnt happen under streamer, however, if you have a very small audience, then the first few listeners are going to connect driectly to the seed, thus revealing the seeds identity. one you start having peers connecting to peers tho, it starts to be a little more private... At that point, it is still possible to find the casters IP address, tho it takes a little more patience.

hope this helps

Sure, that answer sheds some light on the subject.

My curiosity lied in the fact that Peercast says "It offers anonymity for broadcasters because there is no easy way to trace back to the original stream".

Then I read the posts here about some Streamer stations playing Howard and getting in some trubble. This got me thinking/worrying if I should use the "safer" (of the two) options, and which one offered more anonymity.

Of course, I'd love to broadcast and be as anonymous as possible. Free radio is better radio.

i dont know how peercast can claim that.... its bollocks.. you only need to go to the Yellow Pages on Peercast.org and liger your mouse over a "Play" button... You will see the IP address of the seed appear...

There is never a completely anonymous way to stream... (except with posibility of the next version of streamer, which uses a new Bittorrent like swarming), but I would say to you, that streamer is much more anonymous than peercast.

The posting about the busted stern station is nonsense. It's a assertion without substance.

Streamer isn't total anonymous yet. It provides a basic security like darkone already mentioned. Maybe a little bit more anonymous than peercast.

Neither Streamer or PeerCast have much anonimity at all.
PeerCast publishes the caster's IP as part of the tuning URL, and it cannot work without this.
Streamer doesn't publish the caster's IP, but it can easily be found. If there are no listeners, you will always connect to the caster. If there are listeners you can still find the caster by sampling feeds from different listeners and looking for the one with the newest data. The next version of Streamer will publish the casters IP in order to make the system work better. I am not aiming for anonimity at the moment.
But, I do have an idea.... 8)

Anonimity was a goal in the early days. But even more important was the focus on quality. What we have today is a rock solid product that has great features. :D

Sounds great, although i'm not to crazy about the caster's ip being published, that is the major reason i am off of peercast and here now. i'm for a better working system and an "idea" that might make us a little more anonymous. Anonymity helps create a warmer feeling of security.

thanks for listening and a great piece of software.
