I have Winamp associated with MP3 and OGG files but when I have v1.44 set to use the external player it starts up PowerDVD instead of Winamp.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing v1.44, but it didn't fix it. I didn't have this problem with the previous versions of Streamer.

The internal player works fine though.

Hi, Streamer starts the programm associated with the file type mp3. You can't fix your problem with reinstalling streamer. Not streamer is your problem. Associate *.mp3 with winamp and check your powerdvd settings. Seems powerdvd reclaims file associations on start. What player opens if you double click a mp3 or ogg file?

Actually it's .pls files that need to be associated with Winamp, not .mp3 or .ogg. Streamer makes a small .pls file and 'runs' it, which makes windows invoke whatever application currently 'owns' .pls files.
Like Realplayer, this dvd app seems to think it has a right to overrule the human owner of the pc (this folks, is what makes Windoze only a toy wimp-style (Windows Icons Menus Pointer) OS and not a real one. In a real OS the human is at the top of the command structure.

Stealing of filetypes also rather handily generates loads of spurious tech support work for your rivals. We get lots of 'realplayer opened instead of winamp' and 'realplayer opened but my ogg stream didn't play'. Realplayer can't play ogg, so stealing ogg links is just plain nasty.

Easiest way to fix this is to run winamp and set the file associations in it, and then check the 'check no other program has stolen these acssociations on startup' box. Then every time you run winamp it will fix any problems other programs have created by stealing. This may mean you have to run winamp before tuning a station.

I think I'm going to fix this by having Streamer reassociate the human users chosen player with .pls. Something like always reassociate winamp with .pls and always remove realplayer as it has crossed the line of acceptable behaviour with regards to .pls stealing'

Realplayer is what I call 'rudeware'! I absolutely REFUSE to install it! If someone has a file they want me to watch/listen to and it's real media, I just don't watch it and I often tell the website why... If everyone did, then realplayer might go away.

Just a thought... :)

Kevin

BTW, I also call McAfee 'infestware'. (And Norton's is almost as bad!) Because once you install it, it takes a LOT to get rid of it.

This is a great alternative to installing the 'real' Real player. Uses the old Windows Media Player.

Many thanks, darkone!!! That is just great... I can play the files on the occasion I need to without the hassle. Too bad it doesn't handle streaming real media, too. But this is much appreciated!

Kevin
